| Horse logging is the extraction of timber using
horses and with low impact to the ground, using old techniques with modern
equipment.
Horse logging is used for a whole range of timber produced in British
woodlands; from small coppice poles, to thinning in soft and hard woods up
to final crop- large saw logs in soft and hard woods.

The benefit of horse logging is the ultimate low
impact extraction system that out performs all other small scale systems
including quad bikes and mini forwarders. |
| Horses can extract timber effectively and safely
through standing timber without causing any damage or disturbance to the
standing timber or to the flora and fauna. |

This is a highly skilled and complex work and
demands a premium. Horse loggers can work in many different terrains and no
job is the same, which can change the whole structure and price of different
work. |
| Horse loggers can also offer other tasks such as
controlling bracken, brambles and other pernicious weeds, scarifying to
encourage natural regeneration. Horses can offer a flexible answer to a range
of access problems. |
